Community Leadership Award
MHP is Going Platinum: Celebrating 20 Years
David Reznick Receives first Community Leadership Award
On March 18, Montgomery Housing Partnership (MHP) celebrated its 20th year of providing affordable housing in Montgomery County with 500 supporters, business leaders, and affordable housing advocates. The event, MHP Is Going Platinum, raised funds for the private non profit's ongoing efforts to develop, acquire, and rehabilitate affordable apartments and homes for low- and moderate-income working families in the county.
The keynote speaker was Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD). Television journalist Bruce Johnson from WUSA-9 served as master of ceremonies. Co-chairs of the event were: Catherine Leggett, Senior Vice President of ICMA Retirement Corporation, and Tom Bozzuto, CEO of The Bozzuto Group. Attendees included Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett; Councilman Marc Elrich; and Rick Nelson, director of the county’s Department of Housing and Community Affairs.
For the past 20 years, MHP has played a critical role in finding housing solutions for working families. The organization’s inaugural Community Leadership Award was presented at the event to David Reznick, co-Founder and Chairman of the Board of Reznick Group. A dedicated philanthropist, Reznick is nationally recognized as an expert in the field of affordable housing finance. His national firm is based in Montgomery County, and he has been a supporter of MHP’s development and community outreach activities since its inception.
MHP has developed 1,164 units of affordable housing to date, and is nearing completion of a $5 million rehabilitation on a 21-unit building on Flower Avenue in Takoma Park. The Gilbert Highlands project received $1.1 million in Federal stimulus funds for the renovation, and is expected to be open in the summer of 2010. MHP’s holistic approach to housing includes enhancing the vitality of neighborhoods where affordable housing is located, and developing and implementing award-winning community life programs in those neighborhoods.
